A description of my research project would include my take on just how gratuitously wasteful and costly New York’s 421-a Tax Abatement program is.  In the last 4 years alone, the City of New York has given up the opportunity to collect over $750 million in future taxes for the chance to promote affordable housing. However, recent data indicates that a scant 8% of all housing that was built under the umbrella of the tax rebate program can actually be considered “affordable.”  In my opinion, such a high price tag for such a small amount of affordable housing is clearly not what lawmakers had in mind when they designed the plan over 30 years ago.  In completing my research, I have determined that the program is a complete waste of city funds.

The process of writing my compare and contrast essay involving two previous immigrant authors, Suki Kim and Anzia Yezierska, was, to say the least, very challenging.  As young women from completely different backgrounds, the authors lived through a multitude of unique, but harrowing, experiences as poor working immigrants in New York. Writing this paper involved a decent amount of research on how to structure and present each author’s experiences, and how to best compare and contrast those events in their lives. This approach would give (my) readers the appropriate background on these authors and how it relates to my thesis of how immigrants experience harsh problems with assimilation and economic survival.

Okay, I think I have finally located the “publish” button ….here goes…..bombs away!!!

Upon reading Junot Diaz’s essay, “New York: Science Fiction,” I decided that the single most important sentence in the text to be:”A future that had been promised but never arrived.”  The author appears to express his shock and disappointment over his low quality of life while living in “Nueva York” whereby the “Oz [he] dreamed about in the Dominican Republic” was really not anything close to reality for him nor his family. According to Diaz,  both he and his Dad had the “usual” immigrant experiences of only working at “crap” jobs and living in “unwinterized” apartments.  For Diaz, his fantasies of living a better life abroad were really nothing more than, well, …fantasies.
